Sydney Airport International Departures Wall

ANIMATION

Project Commenced: July 2019
Project Completed: December 2019

In 2016 we were invited to present concepts for a new departure wall in the International Departures Hall at Sydney Airport for the Sydney Airport Corporation. One of our concepts based on a traditional Solaris board (split flap display) got the executives at Sydney Airport on board with the 1.3 million dollar investment in a 25 meter LED Wall.

We worked with Eye Candy Animation to design the piece as a procedural system in which parameters can be easily adjusted via code to provide real-time updates of the animation.
We also proposed concepts for using the display for different seasons and events for example Mardi Gras, The Commonwealth Games, and the Lunar New Year.

The wall was installed in 2019 and we were invited back to the project to create the original split-flap display animation for the screen, this particular scene was due to be launched in January 2020 and then COVID hit Australia.

Sydney Airport launched the scene in early 2022 when international travel resumed. The LED wall has been used seasonally to commemorate Remembrance Day, Lunar New Year, Diwali, Ramadan and Naidoc Week.
